101 Things I Want My Daughter to Know As She Grows...

You don't ever realize how much love you could possibly have for your own children until you carry, birth and raise one. or two. or three.... in my case, just one so far :) Parenthood is (and will continue to be)  just as much of a "use your best judgement" adventure as the journey of life itself. Motherhood has changed everything - I feel like it has been the defining moment of my existence. Your actions are not only a reflection on yourself, but a model for your child. I find myself constantly thinking of the kind of impression I am bestowing on my daughter and how my actions will help shape who she is and what she becomes as she grows up. I can only pray that Louie and I will be the best role models for her and teach her all that she needs to know to be an adult in this crazy/wonderful world.

101 things I want my daughter to know as she grows...

  1. When it comes to wearing make-up, there’s a general rule of thumb that applies – Less is more.
  2. Nothing you tell me will ever make me want to stop hearing from you.
  3. No prayer request is ever too small, too silly or too embarrassing to share.
  4. Do what makes you happy.
  5. Bread, garlic and tomatoes are an Italian household staple.
  6. Home is not where we live but who we love.
  7. Good girls aren't boring.
  8. When wearing a dress or skirt, the hem should fall below the tips of your fingers when your arms hang straight at your sides.
  9. God says He has made all things beautiful - that includes you, my love - no matter how you feel about your body.
  10. Be the friend you wish you had.
  11. Love waits. (see #12)
  12. Your body is not yours. Its a gift for your husband. I promise its worth waiting to "upwrap" together.
  13. I will always be your shopping, crafting, baking, or movie watching companion for life.
  14. Don't be afraid of a broken heart.
  15. You can't control what others think about you. Let it go.
  16. Don't keep "friends" with those who bring you down.
  17. Take time to pause and reflect.
  18. A good friend loves at all times. Period.
  19. The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.
  20. Bad haircuts grow out eventually - but as long as your Aunt CeeCee cuts your hair you won't have to worry about a bad haircut.
  21. Don't smoke, its just plain nasty.
  22. I'm never tired of being your mother.
  23. Don't ever give up. Always be persistant - there are no quitters in our family.
  24. Smile. When you do so, you look radiant!
  25. When life pushes you over - push back harder.
  26. Leave petty arguments alone - and never bring up past arguments.
  27. Don't be afraid to color outside the lines.
  28. Remember to count your blessings.
  29. You are not the mistakes you have made.
  30. Whistle while you work.
  31. Read the fine print. Read the document in its entirety, make sure you understand it, and negotiate changes before you sign anything.
  32. Saying sorry first is a sign of strength, not a weakness.
  33. I'm on your side; especially on the days when it doesn't feel like it.
  34. The movies lie. Passion isn't a contorted exercise on a marble staircase, its doing the dishes together and lying with your feet touching in the bed at the end of a long day.
  35. Challenge yourself.
  36. Don't hold in your emotions - a good cry is great therapy.
  37. Husbands need a wife. Not another mom.
  38. Patience is never wasted.
  39. Dad will be the one helping you with your math homework.
  40. Laundry requires time - dont just throw all your clothes and other household linens into one load, toss in the dryer and call it a day - the proper way (the way Nonna taught me) is to do separate loads and use a drying rack - helps extend the life of clothes and linens.
  41. Love happens when you least expect it.
  42. I will be your best friend, but I will be your mother more.
  43. Go big even if it means failing big.
  44. Marriage is an act of courage, commitment and sacrifice; its also the most fun you'll ever have with your best friend.
  45. Don't ever wear something that has writing across your buttocks...
  46. Listen well, both for what’s being said, and for what’s being omitted.
  47. Trust your instincts. If it feels wrong, it probably is. Listen to that voice, and don’t silence it.
  48. Laughter can diffuse many a challenging situation. Especially when you can laugh at yourself.
  49. Act like a lady, get treated like a lady.
  50. Be serious about your money. Take care of your credit and learn how to budget what income you have. It’ll save you the stress of living beyond your means, which is a major pain the back pockets.
  51. Tea parties are not old fashioned, in fact, they are a timeless treat to enjoy the company of other ladies, old and young!
  52. Disney World really is the most magical place in the whole world.
  53. Sing. Sing a Song. Sing out Loud. Sing out Strong!
  54. Name calling hurts, don't do it - and if it is done to you just ignore it.
  55. Gossip is dangerous; avoid it at all costs.
  56. Have one good karaoke song in your back pocket.
  57. Photography is a wonderful art. Learn how to use a camera and capture as much of life as you can so that you can forever cherish those memories. A picture IS worth a thousand words.
  58. Stick around at the dinner table with family after a meal is over. Don't rush off - some of the best stories are told at this time.
  59. Pray, God is ALWAYS listening.
  60. Wear sunscreen... even on cloudy days.
  61. Giving is way better than receiving.
  62. Shop around for the better deal... 9 times out of 10 you'll find a better price and feel so great about the money you saved!
  63. Don't ever starve yourself. EVER. Its not worth the destruction it does to your body.
  64. If you love someone, tell them. And tell them often. It's a wonderful feeling to be reminded that you are loved.
  65. Eat your veggies.
  66. Give it a try; whether its a new food, sport, or venturing to a new place. You won't know how you feel about it until you give it a shot.
  67. Travel.
  68. A bowl of popcorn and an episode or two of FRIENDS can turn any bad day into a good one!
  69. You don't have to stick to a recipe - unless its baking, then always stick to the recipe.
  70. When you are asked to go on a date, it is usually understood that the invitee will foot the bill - but always offer to contribute.
  71. If you create a nickname for someone, use it as a term for endearment, not embarrassment.
  72. Make yourself useful. Get off your bum and help out. Be constructive.
  73. Leave a decent tip. An adequate job requires a standard tip, and outstanding service is rewarded with a bigger one.
  74. Return your shopping cart. Leaving your cart of to the side of your parking spot or in the middle of the lot is just plain rude.
  75. Take only what you need. When things are free it is easy to overindulge.
  76. Wear your seatbelt.
  77. Introduce yourself to your neighbors as soon as you move to someplace new...trust me.
  78. Mind your manners and be courteous to others.
  79. When you drop someone off at home wait until he or she gets inside before driving away.
  80. Keep your grandmother's sauce recipe alive - You may no longer carry your Italian heritage with your last name, but you can certainly carry on its legacy through your cooking. I will teach you.
  81. If you haven't worn it in a year, give it away.
  82. Wear a bra. And make sure it fits properly. If it rides up in the back, it's too big. If it cuts into your chest in the front, it's too small.
  83. Wash your hair every other day. Try not to wash it every day; you can dry it out that way.
  84. Seasonal veggies and fruits are tasty.
  85. Learn another language.
  86. Call if you are going to be late.
  87. Offer your seat to elderly and pregnant people.
  88. A dog is a loyal friend from whom you will learn the nature of love and devotion.
  89. Always send a thank you note. This has served your mother and grandmothers well for generations.
  90. People can change, but you can't change them.
  91. Never get your eyebrows waxed by a woman who draws hers on!
  92. Look people in the eye... I'm working on this one as - it can be tough.
  93. Nothing can ruin your life like drugs. You can’t know how your body will react drugs unless you try them, but the catch is that if you’re part of the majority who can’t control their usage, trying drugs will send you down a spiral from which it will be all but impossible to recover.
  94. Avoid being photographed doing anything you wouldn’t want your father to see... photos can go viral and inadvertently cause much pain and embarrassment.
  95. You can become good at anything you practice.
  96. Always let your conscious be your guide.
  97. When in dating doubt, always err on the side of making things harder for the guy. He needs to convince you that he’s worthy of being in your life, not the other way around.
  98. Ask your dad how to change a flat tire.
  99. Enjoy the innocence of your childhood. There is a constant pressure for you to grow up way too fast. When did 5 become the new 10, anyway? Grow slowly.
  100. A strong hand shake leaves a lasting impression.
  101. Wherever you are in life, you can come home.  I will be here – always.
Love, Mamma

Birthday Boy

Almost Thirty?!

Louie's birthday was this past weekend. He had to work on his actual birthday (which was also his last day at SEED restaurant & bar) so we celebrated his birthday with our families on Sunday. On Saturday I spent most of my morning and afternoon in the kitchen preparing for the family birthday dinner which consisted of spaghetti, homemade sauce (family recipe) and meatballs, followed by a large, classic Hershey's chocolate cake with Oreo filling.

These meatballs were so good

The family sauce recipe always starts with these tomatoes

Final product - Yummy classic Hershey's Chocolate cake with Oreo filling

We had a great time spending the day with our families. The cake went over very well and Louie had fun opening his presents with the help of his two favorite tots.

I thought about it today and realized that this year marks the tenth anniversary of our friendship - a decade has flown by so fast! We were so young when we met...barely 19! These have been some of the best and most memorable years; I eagerly look forward to MANY, MANY more years with my best friend and love of my life.

Happy Birthday Louie.

Weekend Visit with the Cousins

Fun Family Get Togethers

Louie and I had the pleasure of hosting my cousin, Martina, and her husband, Tom, this past weekend on their way home from a beach vacation. We planned a few get togethers with the surrounding Kennesaw family. Saturday we swam at Nonnie and Walters pool, grilled out at mom and dad's community pavillion, and competed in a fun game of bocce ball (a family favorite). Later that evening I experienced an epic fail playing the card game hearts for the first time - ya'll watch out (Martina, Tom and Louie) a revenge game is inevitable! Once Bella warmed up to Tom and Martina she had a great time playing hide and seek with them. every. second. she. could. get. I think they got a good feel for how repetitious toddlers can be! ha ha ha

With this family.... get togethers are always revolved around food!

Shhh! Concentration is KEY

A farewell family photo
Sunday evening I cooked most of the day and made Nonnie's recipe for tomato sauce, I then made a brave attempt to make sausage stuffed shells... I am happy to report that it was a super success! They were so delish!

We enjoyed Martina and Tom's visit and we look forward to the (very hopeful) Christmas visit with rest of the family this year!

Cameron's 3rd Birthday - Part 2

Gym Bus Birthday Party

The second part of Cameron's birthday celebration included all his little friends and a gym bus where the kids could all tumble and play in an air conditioned bus parked outside the house. Cameron has experienced this fun many times at his daycare, but it was a first for Bella. As you can see, she and Cameron had a blast!

Getting reved up!

Big boy Troy! He may have been one of the youngest participants,
but he sure showed all those kids that he could keep up with them!

Indoor zip line! A pro!

With Aunt Kimmy's help, Bella liked it

Cake time!

More bus fun

The madness of gift opening - Cameron was nice to allow his friends to help him unwrap their gifts to him.

looks like a crime fighter to me! Where's the bat signal?

Cameron's 3rd Birthday - Part 1

Gault's Ferry Cookout

We all got together and celebrated Cameron's (Bella's cousin) 3rd birthday on his actual birthday by having a little hotdog cook out near the lake. We lucked out and had beautiful weather - warm & breezy in the shade!

Bella enjoys playing with her baby cousin, Adalynn

Addy loved the open air and looked around wondering where she was
The kids entertained themselves playing in an inflatable boat

Lightning McQueen Birthday Cake

Louie and I made Cameron's birthday cake for his birthday party this past Saturday. The shape of the car was a bit of a challenge but it came together quite nicely!

Amelia Island

Our Go-To Vacation Spot

I'm playing catch up and thought I'd blog about the vacation Bella and I took last June.

In 2003 our family took a vacation to Amelia Island and stayed at a condo that was in walking distance to the beach. Since then we were hooked and it has become a popular vacation spot for us when we want to "get away", especially since its a relatively short drive (6 hrs). Fernandina beach is just south of GA/FL border on the Atlantic Ocean coast.

Louie couldn't take any time off from the restaurant so Bella and I joined my mom and dad and shared their condo. It was a treat to have Christy and Nick  spend a few days with us in the beginning of our stay. We all enjoyed the first two days hittin' the beach and pool, then downtown for dinner.

Christy and her boyfriend, Andy

Uncle Nick and his cool shades!

Outside 49th Street Bistro for a nice family dinner.

This was the first time that Bella had been to the beach since she was 3 months old:

Playing in the sand was so much fun!

She was pretty brave when it came to the ocean as long as someone was right next to her - and it tickled me that she liked the taste of the salty water LOL

One night we ventured down to the marina and took a walk down "Yacht Row". Boy would it be nice to own one of those big-uns!

Then it happened... 3 days into our vacation I got sick... an infection and a virus all at once. AND THEN, Bella came down with an ear infection the following day. You can guess what we did for the rest of our vacation... Bella and I stayed in PJs all day and watch Disney movies to pass the time. It really stunk to be that sick on vacation and away from the comfort of our homes. Bella felt better 2 days later and my illnesses started to ease up the day we left for home.

While we were stuck indoors Bella had fun helping Mom ("Nonna") bake cookies to cheer me up:

And we had an awesome lightning storm that Dad ("Poppy") caught on camera:

Prior to leaving the beach, we spent one last night downtown and checked out a new Mexican restaurant and then stopped in at a new frozen yogurt shop for dessert. Bella thoroughly enjoyed her treat for the night:

We enjoyed our time with my parents AKA "Nonna & Poppy" and I know they loved seeing how much fun Bella had at the beach. A BIG thank you for letting us tag along :) Love ya'll!
